Councilwoman Dr. Pat Woodbury has been elected Chair of the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads, the governing body of Hampton Roads Transit (HRT). Her term began July 1, 2017 and runs until June 30, 2018. Hampton Roads Transit is the public transit provider for Hampton Roads and runs daily bus, light rail, ferry, express bus, and paratransit services for six regional cities – Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach – and covers a service area of 1.3 million people.
“It is an honor to serve as Chairman of this board at a time when transportation is such an important part of each jurisdiction. Connecting our member cities is vital to the region's future economy and growth,” Dr. Woodbury said.
Dr. Woodbury was first appointed to serve on the TDCHR Board in 2008. The board consists of 13 members including one elected official and one citizen representative from each city served by HRT as well as a representative from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. The Commission meets at 1 p.m. typically on the fourth Thursday of each month alternating locations between the Norfolk administrative offices, 509 E. 18th St., Norfolk, and 3400 Victoria Blvd., Hampton. Dr. Woodbury also currently serves on three of the board’s committees: Operations & Oversight; Audit/Budget Review; and Planning & New Starts Development.
In addition to serving as Chair of the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads, Dr. Woodbury also serves on the Virginia Transit Association Board of Directors and is President-elect of the Virginia Municipal League. She has previously served on the Newport News School Board, Sister Cities of Newport News Board of Directors, WHRO Board of Directors, and the Virginia Living Museum Board of Trustees.
A Licensed Professional Counselor, Dr. Woodbury earned a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Longwood College, a master’s degree in School Psychology from the College of William & Mary, and a doctorate in Counseling/School Psychology from William & Mary. Dr. Woodbury has been a member of the Newport News City Council since 2008.
