For a second year, the Youth Services Unit of the Newport News Department of Human Services will offer a leadership opportunity for young people in Newport News who are interested in becoming community leaders and building stronger neighborhoods.
An interest meeting will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 6-7pm at South Morrison Family Education Center, 746 Adams Drive in Newport News. Youth and their parents are encouraged to attend to receive an overview of the project and obtain an application.
We are looking for young people who live in Newport News who would like to work with the residents in their own communities to identify what their neighbors care about and are willing to take action on together. It involves discussions that lead to meaningful actions by the neighbors and the youth. Young people are selected through an application and interview process and will attend one half-day training on the Asset Based Community Development model. They will learn how to lead groups of residents in identifying their desires for their neighborhoods. Participants will be eligible to receive compensation after completing the program.
Please share this information with young people who may be interested in this opportunity.
