ORIGINAL INFORMATION:

About 6:30 A.M. May 31, 2017, after being notified of a Virginia State Police incident, a Newport News Police Department detective observed suspicious activity at the Walmart at 6111 Jefferson Avenue. The detective observed three males get into a car matching the description of a car involved in the State Police incident. The detective called for assistance and additional officers respond. The car attempted to leave the parking lot driving through an entrance to the parking lot in the wrong direction. A marked police unit was entering the entrance and stopped to block the entrance. The officer got out of his car and the suspect car rammed the police car. The three occupants got out of the suspect car and were taken into custody. It was determined that the suspect car had been reported stolen in Suffolk. Officers located two handguns while taking the suspects into custody.

About 9:30 A.M. officers located a car in the 5800 block of Marshall Avenue that had been reported stolen. The car accelerated and made a left turn onto Gloucester Drive and struck a tree. Three occupants ran from the car. Two suspects were apprehended and police were looking for the third. Police believe these two incidents are related. Schools in the area were placed on lockdown which has since been lifted.

The investigation(s) remain ongoing at this time.
