Ironclads fought along our shores?

This battle, sometimes referred to as the Battle of Hampton Roads, helped to make wooden battleships obsolete and hastened the end of the Civil War. The world-famous Mariners’ Museum is the designated custodian of the artifacts recovered from the ironclad vessel USS Monitor, like its famous 120-ton revolving gun turret. The turret was brought up in 2002 from the wreckage site of the USS Monitor off the coast of North Carolina.
