Newport News Park will hold a 50th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. inside the Park at Picnic Shelters 19 & 20. City and State officials will unveil commemorative plaques that will be placed at the renovated flagpole plaza on Constitution Way (the Park’s main road) along with a time capsule.

Dedicated in 1966, Newport News Park is one of the largest, most treasured, and most visited, municipal parks in the Country. At over 7,700 acres, it is almost nine times larger in size than New York’s Central Park. While it’s referred to as a city park, the regional scope of this asset is seen in its visitation – the Park is regularly used by residents from Richmond to Virginia Beach and everywhere in between.

Newport News Park is home to an incredible variety of native wildlife normally found in only State or National parks – deer, foxes, otters, raccoon, bobcats and beavers, to name a few – all found in a natural setting of lush woodlands, flowering meadows and shimmering lakes. Recreation amenities in the Park, used by over 3 million visitors annually, are almost as extensive as its wildlife, with visitors enjoying camping at the 188-site campground, playing golf at one of two 18-hole courses, hiking or biking over thirty miles of trails, fishing, paddleboating or canoeing in one of two freshwater lakes, picnicking at one of 18 shelters, flying model aircraft at the Park’s aeromodel field, playing disc golf or simply enjoying the beauty of the Park’s planted and indigenous flora. The Newport News Visitor Center, located at the main entrance of the park, provides visitors information about the Park and local attractions while the Discovery Center features exhibits related to the Park’s flora, fauna and Civil War history.
