Long-awaited solution for access to healthy food in the Southeast Community opens for business
The City of Newport News and the Newport News Economic Development Authority are pleased to announce the Grand Opening of Jim’s Local Market. Jim's Local Market (JLM) is a full-service supermarket providing high quality, local, affordable food to areas in Virginia with limited food access.
Owned and operated by Jim Scanlon, a grocery store executive with over 40 years of experience, JLM will serve as a much-needed resource for residents of the Southeast Community of Newport News, a community which has not had the benefit of a full-service grocery store for nearly two years. “Jim’s Local Market represents a real opportunity to build sustainable economic viability for this community, which is a win for us all,” said Councilwoman Tina Vick.
Much of the store’s focus will be on providing premium fresh produce and other healthy options. Scanlon is also committed to hiring from the local area and providing training opportunities for both his employees and customers. Councilwoman Saundra Cherry noted, “Jim’s Local Market aims to enrich the lives of our citizens not only through the groceries he sells, but also through the gift of education.”
The store features a BayPort Credit Union branch. In addition to banking services, BayPort will offer classes to help improve customers’ financial literacy. Bon Secours will also partner with JLM to host health and wellness classes in the store’s community room.
Jim’s Local Market is located at 3101 Jefferson Avenue in Brooks Crossing. The store is open daily, from 7 AM to 9 PM.
