[ARCHIVED] Newport News Transportation Center Project

The Newport News Transportation Center Project is progressing towards an October 2016 advertisement date with Construction projected to be completed by October of 2018. The new Facility will be located at the current borrow pit site at 500 Bland Boulevard. This location provides a more centralized location for the Center with easy access to the Airport. The project recently had an Environmental Assessment approved and will go to a Conditional Use Permit Hearing on May 4th, 2016. The total Project Cost is estimated at $41 Million dollars which includes a medium sized Amtrak station, Parking, walking trails, facilities for Busses, Taxis and an Amtrak Maintenance facility. The project is funded by State InterCity Passenger Rail Operating Capitol Funds through the Department of Rail and Public Transportation as well as Federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds through the FHWA and the Virginia Department of Transportation. By 2018 Amtrak anticipates increasing the number of trains to Newport News from 2 trains per day to 3.
