The Newport News Police Department is pursuing international reaccreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) and will be the first agency in Virginia to complete a combined Tri-Arc assessment. A team of four assessors consisting of Timothy Fitch (retired from the St. Louis County [MO] Police Department), Portia Swinson (retired from the University of Maryland Police Department), Frances Moore (of the Greenville [SC] Police Department), and David Hornyak (of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation) will begin their review of the agency’s policies and practices on Sunday, December 6, 2015, and will conclude their review on Wednesday, December 9, 2015. Should the department successfully pass the on-site review, it will be granted accredited status for its law enforcement, dispatch, and training functions through March of 2020.
