Mayor McKinley Price and City Manager Jim Bourey today announced the selection of three local charities to be the beneficiaries of the 2016 Newport News One City Marathon. In its second year, the marathon will benefit organizations that provide services to those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence. The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors, Fear 2 Freedom and Transitions Family Violence Services were selected out of 37 applications submitted for consideration. “We are very pleased to be able to support these charities as part of the 2016 One City Marathon,” said Bourey. “There is a big need in this area and being named a marathon charity will give these vital agencies not only financial support for the programs they offer to the residents of our city, but will also give them increased exposure for the services they provide.” As selected charitable partners, these organizations will benefit from promotion on the marathon website and through social media, inclusion in the post-race celebration, and online donation opportunities at race registration. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the marathon will be distributed to these three charitable organizations. Brief descriptions of the charitable partners follow. The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors has played an active role in the reduction and elimination of sexual and domestic violence in Hampton Roads since 1996. The Center provides free crisis stabilization and counseling services to victims, their families and friends. The Center also provides hospital and court companionship, a 24-hour hotline operated by trained advocates, and advocacy with law enforcement. Fear 2 Freedom (www.fear2freedom.org) Fear 2 Freedom was established in 2011 here in Newport News to redeem and restore those wounded by sexual assault, bringing them hope and healing, and to change the cultural understanding surrounding this issue by empowering college students. Through their University Campaign, Fear 2 Freedom partners universities with local hospitals and community organizations to provide after care kits to victims of sexual assault. The program also focuses on awareness, education and empowerment activities among college campuses across the country. Transitions Family Violence Services (www.transitionsfvs.org) Transitions Family Violence Services has been providing comprehensive services to adult and child victims of domestic violence on the Peninsula since 1977. Transitions seeks to build safe and healthy families by providing programs that offer intervention and prevention strategies to help end abuse. Transitions Family Violence Services provides support to victims through their 24-hour crisis hotline services, emergency and transitional shelters, legal advocacy, safety planning, support groups and other programs.
