Mayor McKinley Price and City Manager Jim Bourey today presented checks to the three local charities that had been selected as the beneficiaries of the inaugural Newport News One City Marathon that took place March 15th.
The charities – the Newport News Mayor’s Book Club, Soundscapes, and the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank – were presented with checks representing the total amount each received from marathon proceeds and direct contributions through online registration.
“We are pleased to be able to provide a significant financial contribution to these most deserving charities,” said Bourey. “It is our hope that by serving as a One City Marathon charity partner, these organizations also received additional exposure and increased awareness for their activities and the work that they do in our community.”
City Manager Bourey also announced that Newport News Shipbuilding will again be the presenting sponsor for the 2016 One City Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, March 13th. Charity partners for the 2016 marathon will be determined at a later date. Registration for next year’s marathon will be available beginning in June.
“We are delighted that Newport News Shipbuilding is serving as the presenting sponsor for the 2016 One City Marathon,” said Bourey. “They have been a terrific corporate citizen and partner for this community. We are incredibly fortunate to have their support in showcasing our great city and promoting healthy living.”
Brief descriptions of the inaugural One City Marathon charitable partners follow.
The Newport News Mayor’s Book Club (awarded $6,594.89) promotes early literacy, improves social and emotional development, and focuses on the belief that reading is a core value. During the school year, the mayor and community volunteers read a selected book-of-the-month to children in preschools throughout the city. A critical component of the program is to provide each child enrolled in the preschool classes with a copy of the selected book.
Soundscapes (awarded $6,503.71) is a nonprofit, El Sistema-inspired, intervention and educational organization dedicated to teaching transformational life skills to disadvantaged youth using intensive music study and ensemble performance. Through after-school and summer programs, Soundscapes has demonstrated success in developing cognitive and social skills as well as character for youth in grades 1 through 8 who are at-risk.
The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank (awarded $7,078.05) receives, inventories and distributes food and grocery products to over 90 charitable agencies in the city of Newport News including faith based organizations, pantries and shelters. The Foodbank serves as the front line of hunger relief, partnering with member agencies and food programs to serve those in our community who are food insecure.
