Due to icy conditions of residential roads, all solid waste collection services (i.e., garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections) will be suspended for the remainder of the week. All collection services are expected to return to the normal schedule on Monday, February 23rd.
Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing before Saturday, therefore not offering any relief to current icy conditions. The substantial weight of collection vehicles and the potential danger of sliding on icy roads as the result of lost traction make collections unsafe for the public and City employees. When it’s safe to do so, citizens are asked to please bring in trash and recycling carts from the curb to prevent damage to the carts, returning them curbside on their regular collection day next week.
The Recovery Operations Center (formerly known as the Denbigh Compost & Dropoff facility), located at 550 Atkinson Way, is closed to the public on Thursday and Friday due to icy conditions at the facility. Residents who receive City collection services may take additional household garbage to the Recovery Operations Center on Saturday, February 21, from 8AM – 4PM. The facility will also be operating the dropoff section of the facility on Sunday, February 22, from 8AM – 12PM for household garbage disposal.
Extra recyclables can be taken to one of the six recycling drop-off sites located throughout the city:
- Main Street Library, 110 Main St.
- Fire Station #4, 13561 Jefferson Ave., near Ft. Eustis
- Fire Station #6, 685 Oyster Point Road
- Fire Station #10, 12455 Warwick Blvd.
- Briarfield Fire Station #7, 5844 Marshall Ave.
- Recovery Operations Center, 550 Atkinson Way
