Mayor McKinley L. Price to Host 6th Annual Play Ball Event

Newport News Mayor McKinley L. Price and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism are partnering with Major League Baseball and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula to offer an evening of fun and engaging activities for young people in the city. The 6th Annual Play Ball Event will take place on Wednesday, August 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at TowneBank Athletic Park at 741 Adams Drive.

“After a year of virtual events and activities, I’m looking forward to seeing Newport News young people and families on the baseball diamond,” said Mayor McKinley L. Price, DDS.  “I played baseball growing up, and it helped teach me the value of working with others, the significance of perseverance, and the power of leadership.  We want young people in Newport News to leave our event understanding the importance of community, teamwork and sportsmanship.”

Youth and families are invited to this free event to participate in baseball games and sporting activities while also enjoying free chips and hot dogs.  The highlight of “Play Ball” is a baseball game where participants have the chance to compete against city and community leaders on the field.  Registration is not required and young people of all ages are invited to attend.

This year’s event includes Hampton University’s mobile COVID vaccine clinic.  Anyone 12 and over can get a free Pfizer vaccine from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Appointments are available and walk-ups will be accepted.  To schedule an appointment, visit https://vaccineappointments.virginia.gov/appointment/en/client/registration?clinic_id=6887.

“The emergence of the Delta variant and the sharp rise of COVID cases in Newport News and the Commonwealth makes getting the vaccine more important and urgent than ever,” commented Mayor Price. “We must continue to fight COVID-19, and the best way to do this is by getting a vaccine.  I hope young people and families attending Play Ball will roll up their sleeves and get the vaccine.”

This event is part of Major League Baseball’s “Play Ball” initiative, which is supported annually by the United States Conference of Mayors.  Mayors across the country host events that highlight the fun nature of baseball and encourage young people to participate in activities.
