Newport News to Host Hurricane Preparedness Facebook Live on May 13

Hurricane season officially begins June 1 and lasts until November 30. Storms can strike at any time and it’s important you have plans in place to protect yourself, your family and home. This week is the National Weather Services’ annual Hurricane Preparedness Week.  We will share tips in this newsletter and on social media throughout the week to empower you with the information and resources you need to prepare for the 2021 Hurricane Season.

To address your questions and concerns, the city is hosting a Facebook Live this Thursday, May 13 at 6 p.m. Panelists will discuss the upcoming hurricane season, provide big picture information on hurricanes that form in the Atlantic Ocean, share hurricane preparedness tips, discuss prediction methods and highlight the ways information is distributed to the public.  After remarks and a discussion, panelists will address viewer questions. Our esteemed panel includes:

  • Dan Brown, Senior Hurricane Specialist/Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Hurricane Center
  • Jeff Orrock, Chief Meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Wakefield Office in Wakefield
  • George Glazner, Deputy Coordinator of Emergency Management for the City of Newport News
  • Nicole DelValle, Emergency Management Specialist with the City of Newport News

To watch and interact visit the Newport News Facebook Page, tune into NNTV (Cox 48 and Verizon 19) or go online to www.nnva.gov/nntv.  To submit questions or comments in advance, email cityinfo@nnva.gov.
