Newport News Voter Registrar Encourages Absentee Voting During Pandemic

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the Newport News Voter Registrar’s Office is urging citizens to Vote By Mail and utilize online services for the May 19 General Election. Citizens can register to vote, update voter registration information or request an absentee ballot through the Virginia Department of Elections website. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 12.

Absentee voting is currently underway for the May 19 election, and voters may request an absentee ballot by using the “2A My disability or illness” choice if none of the other qualifying reasons apply. State law requires voters to have a justification to cast an absentee ballot, but officials have determined that the coronavirus outbreak qualifies as a valid reason for everyone. For voters who do not wish to submit their absentee ballot by mail, the Newport News Voter Registrar’s Office is offering curbside services Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at City Hall, 2400 Washington Avenue, if needed. Voters will need to park in the designated “Park to Vote” spaces in the City Hall parking lot (located next to handicap parking) and call the office at 757-926-8683 for assistance.

For more information, visit the Voter Registrar’s website.
