Election Officers Needed!

It's important for voters to have a successful experience on Election Day, and election officers are vital to ensuring that happens. The Newport News Electoral Board is looking for residents who are interested in becoming officers to work the polls. Election officers will set up polling machines and equipment, process voters, manage the election process throughout the day, tally results, and complete standard procedures after the polls close.

To qualify to serve as an officer of election, you must:

  • be able to take direction, pay attention to detail and not be easily distracted;
  • be able to work the entire day on Election Day beginning at 5 a.m. until all tallies have been completed;
  • enjoy meeting people and serving the public; and
  • not hold elected office or be the employee of an elected official.

Election officers are compensated for their work at the polls, with chief officers receiving $170, assistant officers $135 and all other officers $110.

Citizens interested in becoming an election officer should contact the Office of the Electoral Board on the 6th floor of City Hall, 2400 Washington Ave. at 926-8683 or More information is available at
