Activities happening all weekend for everyone; runners can still register for Sunday’s races

The City of Newport News’ fifth annual One City Marathon takes place Sunday and, with related events all weekend long, there are fun activities for everyone.

Marathon Weekend begins with a free, two-day Health & Wellness Expo presented by Riverside Health System. Residents and visitors can stop by the Denbigh Community Center on Friday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to find a variety of fitness and nutrition related vendors, preventative health information, interactive games and training evaluations. This year’s expo will also have free fitness classes, mini workshops and demonstrations happening both days and runners can pick up their bibs at the expo.

On Saturday, March 2 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., visit Brooks Crossing for the Family Fun and Fit Day. Enjoy free class demos, fitness classes, vendors, refreshments from Piggly Wiggly and music. The kids can also enjoy inflatables, outdoor games and an obstacle course.

New this year is a free Women’s Forum. The forum, themed Fiercely Empowered Women (FEW), is being held Saturday, March 2, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn City Center. Women are invited to enjoy a day of empowering conversations, demonstrations, workshops, freebies and fun. WVEC 13 Meteorologist Crystal Harper will serve as the event's keynote speaker and Mrs. Virginia Pageant contestant Mrs. Newport News, Lourdes Spurlock, will serve as the event's facilitator.

Spend Saturday evening at the One City Marathon Pasta Dinner, sponsored by Riverside Health System and held at Tradition Brewing Co. in City Center. The event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 each and are available at the Health & Wellness Expo.

All races – the One City Marathon, marathon relay, half marathon (new this year), Maritime 8K and Nautical Mile Fun Run – take place on Sunday, March 3.  The marathon and relay begin at 7:00 a.m. at Newport News Park; the half marathon begins at 7:00 a.m. at Menchville High School; and the 8K and Nautical Mile begin at the Victory Arch in downtown Newport News at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. respectively. Online registration has closed, but race registration is still available on-site at the Health & Wellness Expo and on race day at the starting line of each event.

On Sunday, March 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the One City, One Celebration takes place at the Super Block near the finish line of the races in downtown Newport News. Enjoy music, food, runner relaxation areas, games and more.
