Newport News, Va., – Riverside Health System has signed-on to become the Official Health and Wellness Provider for the One City Marathon. In this role, they will provide health supports on race day while offering resources for runners and participants during free events prior to the races.
“As the official Health and Wellness sponsor for the One City Marathon, we are honored to provide medical assistance and education to the athletes participating in this race,” says Dr. J. R. Barley, D. O., CAQSM, Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician and Medical Director for the One City Marathon. “We love participating in activities that promote healthy lifestyles in our community.”
Riverside is also the presenting sponsor of the Marathon’s free, two-day Health & Wellness Expo. Stop by Denbigh Community Center on Friday, March 1 from 12 to 7 p.m. or Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to find a variety of fitness and nutrition related vendors, preventative health information, interactive games and training evaluations.
In celebration of the marathon’s fifth year, Expo programming is being expanded to offer free fitness classes, demonstrations, and health lectures. Visit Denbigh Community Center on Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 to learn from vendors, receive free services and giveaways, and learn more about various health topics. The Expo also features health professionals from Riverside, demonstrations from community organizations, and free fitness classes. The Expo is open to the public, including those not participating in a race.
The night before the Marathon, Riverside is sponsoring the One City Marathon Pasta Dinner at Tradition Brewing in City Center, with the food being provided by the Holiday Inn Newport News. The event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and are available online. You do not need to be a registered runner in the One City Marathon to purchase tickets.
All races – marathon, marathon relay, half marathon (new this year), Maritime 8K and Nautical Mile Fun Run – take place on Sunday, March 3. Online registration is available through February 26, with registration also available at the Health & Wellness Expo Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, and on race day at the starting line of each event.
In addition to a weekend full of activities, many free events are taking place throughout February, including fitness classes, Dinner with a Dietician, a Meal Prep Delivery Food Service Tasting, and Financial Bingo with BayPort Credit Union. About the Newport News One City Marathon:
Presented by Newport News Shipbuilding, the fifth annual Newport News One City Marathon takes place Sunday, March 3, 2019. The marathon course runs the entire 26-mile length of the city, with Newport News Park as the setting for the start of the race and the Victory Arch in downtown serving as the finish line. Along the way, the certified course takes runners past various cultural amenities, educational institutions, businesses and neighborhoods. The marathon, which also offers a relay option, culminates at a One City, One Celebration event at the Super Block, celebrating as runners race through the finish line. In addition to the marathon, which also offers a relay option, there is an 8K Run/Walk, a Nautical Mile Kids Fun Run, and, NEW for 2019, a much-requested half marathon race. Marathon weekend (March 1-3, 2019) also includes a Health and Wellness Expo, Family Fit and Fun Day, and other community focused events, including a Women’s Forum in 2019.
