[ARCHIVED] Fourteen Arrested in Domestic-Violence Suppression Operation

NNPD ARRESTS 14 IN CITYWIDE DOMESTIC-VIOLENCE SUPPRESSION OPERATION

(ARRESTS INCLUDE SUSPECT FROM DECEMEBER 19 SHOOTING)

Newport News Police officers arrested 14 suspects in a coordinated takedown that began early Thursday morning, December 20, 2018. The operation resulted in over 27 charges.

“Operation Mistletoe” was a warrant operation executed to address the significant number of domestic-related aggravated assault charges throughout the city. Members of the HIP Teams, Organized Crime Division, Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Criminal Intelligence Unit, and Economic Crimes Unit participated in the sweep. (See attached list of arrestees and if booking photos were available, they are attached as well.)

Included in the operation was the apprehension of Lorri Smith of the no hundred block of Jody’s Way. Ms. Smith was wanted for the December 19 shooting at the 6100 block of Jefferson Avenue of a 23-year old woman known to her. After a thorough investigation, warrants for Ms. Smith were obtained for: malicious wounding, maliciously shoot/throw at vehicle, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, purchase/transport firearm during protective order, and EPO Violation. And, on December 21, less than 24-hours later, Ms. Smith was taken into custody, without incident. A booking photo is attached.

Sadly, it’s estimated that at least half of all aggravated assaults in Newport News are domestic-related, meaning something or someone involving the home or family. And, domestic-related incidents are consistently in the top three calls for service and therefore are a major focus area in our efforts to keep the citizens of Newport News safe,” said Chief Drew. Chief Drew added that operations like this will continue and future sweeps are planned.

If you find yourself in a dangerous situation, call 911. For help in dealing with domestic violence, call Transitions Family Violence Services’ 24 hour crisis hotline at (757) 723-7774.
