[ARCHIVED] 19th Street Homicide Suspect in Custody

Tillery, Damontaze Montrell

On July 26, 2018, police and fire personnel were dispatched to the 600 block of 19th Street in reference to a vehicle fire. While in route, officers were notified a shooting victim was involved in the incident. Upon arrival, 31-year-old Javon Stephenson , a Virginia Beach man, was located in the driver seat of a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

After a thorough investigation, earlier this morning, Damontaze Montrell Tillery, a 34- year-old Newport News man was picked up by the Newport News Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with: 2nd degree murder; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. A booking photo is attached.
