2019 marks the fifth year of the Newport News One City Marathon, and with that comes a fifth race being added to the complement of offerings – a half marathon. At the request of participants, the new event is available for 2019 along with the marathon, marathon relay, 8K Run/Walk, and Nautical Mile Kids Fun Run. Registration is now open for all races at www.onecitymarathon.com.
Mayor McKinley Price announced the addition of the fifth race today at Kiln Creek Elementary School where he also recognized Kiln Creek Students for having the most participants in the Nautical Mile for the 2018 event. Eighty-nine students in the Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism after school program at Kiln Creek Elementary ran the equivalent of 25 miles and read 26 books prior to this year’s marathon, and ran in the Nautical Mile, completing their marathon run. Mayor Price also presented Denbigh High School with a $500 big check for winning the Hometown Spirit award for the 2018 marathon. The Denbigh High School band, cheerleaders and others enthusiastically cheered marathoners on as they passed the school, which is along the marathon route.

About the Newport News One City Marathon:Presented by Newport News Shipbuilding, the fifth annual Newport News One City Marathon takes place Sunday, March 3, 2019. The marathon course runs the entire 26 mile length of the city, with Newport News Park as the setting for the start of the race and the Victory Arch in downtown serving as the finish line. Along the way, the certified course takes runners past various cultural amenities, educational institutions, businesses and neighborhoods. The marathon, which also offers a relay option, culminates at Victory Landing Park as runners race through the finish line. In addition to the marathon, there is also an 8K Run/Walk and a Nautical Mile Kids Fun Run, and new for 2019 is a much requested half marathon race. Marathon weekend (March 1-3, 2019) also includes a Health and Wellness Expo and other community focused events.
