The US Army Corps of Engineers is advertising a project to provide maintenance dredging in the Deep Creek channel in Newport News. The City of Newport News is holding a public information meeting on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. This open forum style meeting will be held at:

The Deep Creek channel in Newport News is a federal shallow draft navigation project that supports commercial and recreational activity. The project consists of an entrance channel authorized to 8 feet deep and 100 feet wide, extending from the James River for approximately 9,000 feet to the harbor. The harbor is authorized to a depth of 8 feet, a width that ranges from 400 feet to 740 feet, and 1,940 feet in length to a point near Parkers Landing. The Deep Creek Channel has received funding to support maintaining the channel and harbor, which consists of removing shoaled sediment from the channel and restoring navigable depths.

The dredging event will cover the harbor and a majority of the entrance channel as defined by the federal authorization. The dredging will consist of mechanical methods of removing shoaled sediment and transporting that material to the Craney Island Material Management Area for placement. The maintenance dredging contract is scheduled to be awarded to a contractor for construction in November of 2023.
