Memorial Day Concert in City Center
Citizens visiting City of Newport News offices

will find them closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. However, the city is co-sponsoring a free concert in City Center with Virginia Arts Festival honoring service members later that evening. The concert by the fountain, featuring the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band, starts at 7:30 and gates to the event open at 5 p.m. Food and beverages are available for purchase.
City holiday schedule:
- All City offices are closed on Monday, May 29.
- All Newport News public libraries are closed on Sunday, May 28, and Monday, May 29.
- All garbage, recycling, and bulk waste collections for the week is delayed one day

- Monday’s collections take place on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and Thursday’s on Friday.
- The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, which serves the residents of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County, is open for adoptions on Monday, May 29 from noon – 5:00 p.m.
