As Memorial Day weekend approaches, it’s important to remember no one should ever get behind the wheel if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers dramatically increases during holidays. As a precaution to keep citizens and guests safe this weekend, the Newport News Police Department is conducting increased DUI patrol operations Friday through Sunday.

These operations last from 8:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. each night. The patrols consist of additional officers focusing their activities in areas where motorists are more likely to be operating their vehicles while impaired by alcohol or drugs. The officers assigned to this operation are working in an overtime capacity and are being paid through a Division of Motor Vehicles traffic safety grant. The areas officers are concentrating on are not being made public prior to the operation.
