The Newport News Human Services Department & Thomas Nelson Community College have partnered to offer free career training to Supplemental Nu

trition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients. Newport News is one of a limited number of communities selected to pilot Virginia’s new EleVAte SNAP Employment & Training Pilot project. There are a limited number of training slots available to residents of Newport News. This initiative is part of a national research study. Participants will be selected by a lottery-type system.
- Training may include:
- Welding
- Medical Office Assistant
- Facilities Maintenance
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Information Technology (IT) and Administration
Supportive services such as transportation assistance, child care (limited availability,) eye exams/ eyeglasses, job interview clothing, tools, and work uniforms, are available.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided funding for this pilot project. The EleVAte SNAP Employment and Training program is administered through the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS). The USDA and VDSS are equal opportunity employers and service providers.
