As bright sunny days become more of the norm than those days with chilly winds, it is time to be proactive and make sure we are prepared for hurricanes or tropical storms that may come our way. Yes, we said it… the big ‘H’ word. While they are not that much fun to endure,

they definitely require ample preparation. According to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), Hurricane season begins June 1 and lasts to November 30. The first step in preparation is to know how to prepare.
Ready Hampton Roads is a one-stop information center for all of the localities in the area. There you can find information about making an emergency kit, making a plan and staying informed as well as local emergency information.
You can also download the current
Hurricane Guide on the VDEM website. It will provide evacuation routes, and what to do before, during, and after a hurricane. The guide has a convenient set of often used telephone numbers and websites. The website also links to the Ready Virginia app that provides up-to-the-minute information that benefits every Virginian. The app is available in both
iPhone and
Android.
