Governor McAuliffe has issued a Certificate of Recognition officially naming May 2017 as Adult Abuse Prevention Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During the month of May, Adult Protective Services staff from the Newport News Department of Human Services

are speaking with seniors who participate in the Active Lifestyles Programs in various community centers across the City to share information about the signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. In addition, they are discussing the procedure to follow to make a report if abuse is occurring or suspected. Senior citizens are also learning about the services that are available to them in the community.
Adult Protective Services investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of incapacitated adults between the ages of 18 and 60 and anyone over the age of 60. Last year there were more than 23,000 reports of adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation in the state. If you suspect or have knowledge of abuse, neglect or exploitation and want to make an Adult Protective Services report, please call 757-926-6329 or 1-888-832-3858.
