Recently, Newport News Public Schools

and Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism's Youth Programs hosted Governor McAuliffe and First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe at McIntosh Elementary. Because April is Month of the Military Child, a month that promotes awareness of the important role children play in the Armed Forces community, Governor McAuliffe lead a discussion with 15 military connected students who participate in the Richneck/McIntosh afterschool program about their experiences. Many military officials from Hampton Roads also participated discussing the challenges and transition of being a military child.

Mrs. McAuliffe participated in a Summer Food Service Program Community Meeting. The meeting included various organizations in Newport News who work to feed youth meals in the summer as well as the meeting host, No Kid Hungry VA campaign, a food program launched in 2011 that connects eligible kids to federal nutrition programs. The organizations came together to discuss ways to increase participation from youth that are not already being fed in the summer.
The No Kid Hungry Virginia campaign is the product of a public-private partnership that includes the First Lady of Virginia, Dorothy McAuliffe, the VA Department of Health, the Virginia Department of Education, and several corporate partners.
