Mayor McKinley Price and City Manager Jim Bourey

presented checks yesterday to the three local charities that had been selected as the beneficiaries of the 2016 Newport News One City Marathon. In its second year, the marathon benefited organizations that provide services to those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence. Each charity was presented with checks representing the total amount each received from marathon proceeds and direct contributions through online registration –
The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors ($6,610.67),
Fear 2 Freedom ($7,555.67) and
Transitions Family Violence Services ($7,480.67). Transitions’ total also included a $1,200 donation from the Tango Marathon that also took place during Marathon Weekend.
“It is so exciting to be able to provide these very deserving charities the proceeds from the 2016 One City Marathon,” said Bourey.

“We recognize that there is a big need for assisting those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence, and we are proud to have had all three as our charitable partners. It is our hope that by serving as marathon charities, these agencies received greater exposure for the services they provide our community.”
Newport News Shipbuilding has served as Presenting Sponsor of the One City Marathon each year, and City Manager Bourey also announced today that the shipyard will again be the Presenting Sponsor for next year’s event. The 2017 One City Marathon will take place on Sunday, March 12th, and registration is available now at
www.onecitymarathon.com. Marathon weekend (March 10-12) will also include a Health and Wellness Expo and other community focused events.
