The evening of Friday, April 22nd, Hampton Roads will receive a visit from Hokule’a, a 60-foot, double hulled Polynesian voyaging canoe operated by the Polynesian Voyaging Society when it arrives around 8 PM at the James River Fishing Pier in Huntington Park. On Saturday, April 23rd, from 10 AM to 4 PM at the pier The Mariners’ Museum and the Polynesian Voyaging Society will present Earth Day activities for the public that will include children’s crafts and family fun. Visitors can learn about traditional Polynesian culture, voyaging and wayfinding and meet the crew of Hokule’a, as well as learn about ways to protect the James River and Chesapeake Bay. The event is free and open to the public. Early Sunday, April 24th, Hokule’a will continue on her journey heading to her next stop in Yorktown where she is planned to be docked at Riverwalk Landing until Sunday, May 8th.

Hokule’a is on a voyage around the world to bring awareness to issues facing our oceans. The purpose of this worldwide voyage is to start a dialogue in local communities about ways to protect our waterways and natural resources. More information about the Hokule’a can be found at
