Potential Additional Interstate Exit Ramp at Jefferson Avenue

The City is in discussions with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) about a potential new exit from I-64 West just beyond Jefferson Avenue. This new exit would connect from the end of the collector/distributor (CD) lanes along I-64 just past the current Jefferson Avenue exits and take motorists to Chatham Drive at Boykin Lane. The ramp would be at grade (not a bridge) and run between the stone quarry in the Newport Marketplace shopping center and the Newport News Green Foundation storm water pond at Chatham Drive and Bland Boulevard. The CD lane barrier would be extended to keep the exit separate from the main interstate lanes. This project was identified because the high volume of traffic exiting onto northbound Jefferson Avenue causes congestion on I-64, and new exit also has the potential to reduce congestion along Jefferson Avenue by providing a direct route for traffic headed to Bland Boulevard and the adjacent shopping centers.

With the expansion of I-64, VDOT recently completed an internal analysis of our recommendation and has agreed that the new exit would be beneficial for the interstate and the area. VDOT and the City are now working to obtain Federal Highway Administration approval of the concept and to identify funding for the project.
