One City Marathon Wave Stations

Posted on February 27, 2017 at 8:07 AM by Communications Department

On Sunday, March 12th, runners from near and far will take a “tour” of our city on a USA Track and Field certified course that starts at Newport News Park. The marathon takes runners past cultural amenities, businesses, educational and religious institutions, and through neighborhoods toward Downtown where the Victory Arch serves as the backdrop for the finish line. Over 5,000 people, most from right here in Hampton Roads, have participated in one of the four races since our inaugural event in 2015.
Some of the most memorable parts of the race weekend are the ways neighborhoods, houses of worship, schools, and businesses cheer on runners across the city as they push toward the finish line. We encourage everyone to create their own “wave stations" and show their One City Marathon spirit along the entire marathon and 8K courses. There are opportunities to cheer the runners on and interact with sponsors at relay exchange points, water stations and wave stations. A competition will be held for the wave station with the most hometown spirit. The Hometown Spirit Award will be presented at the post-race One City One Celebration to the group who shows exceptional Hometown Spirit on race day. Towne Bank will also award the winning group with a $500 donation to the charity of their choice. How will you show your Hometown Spirit on marathon day?
