Follow the Drinking Gourd
On Saturdays in February, visitors of the
Virginia Living Museum will be able to see the night skies from more than 100 years ago in “Follow the Drinking Gourd”,

a FREE planetarium show that explains how the stars of the northern sky led slaves to freedom during the era of the Underground Railroad. The story is an inspirational tale of an African-American family’s flight to freedom and how they used constellations like the Big Dipper to guide the way.
This show is based on a children’s book with the same name that was written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter. The free production starts at 4:30 p.m. every Saturday in February and incorporates historical images from the local region.
Museum admission is not required to watch the show and the “Follow the Drinking Gourd” show is also available as a private show all year long.
