Vibha Madan: United Way Community Hero

Posted on January 31, 2017 at 7:57 AM by Communications Department

United Way of the Virginia Peninsula is honored to saluteMadan_sc Community Hero Vibha Madan. As an executive in the hotel industry, Vibha’s days are not only packed with meetings, events, and travel, but also the demands of a busy family with two young children. Yet Vibha finds time to work as a passionate volunteer for United Way’s funded literacy programs at Peninsula READS.

Many hard-working hotel industry employees are living and working with a language barrier. Vibha understands that they are too often overwhelmed by stigma and lack of confidence to learn the language skills that would help them have a full and productive life. That’s where Vibha and her work with Peninsula READS comes in. “I try to open people’s eyes to it,” she says. “They are missing out on the rhythm of life. They are not able to be part of the conversation. Language makes the difference in being accepted, and when people are accepted and engaged, they become productive members of our community and they become successful.”
