Former Vice Mayor passes
The City of Newport News has lost a great public servant with the passing of Newport News native son and former vice mayor, Charles C. Allen.
From 1988 until his retirement in 2008, Mr. Allen, served the residents of Newport News, first as the Deputy Director of Planning, then as a City Council member and finally as Vice Mayor for 12 years. He was committed to the revitalization of the Southeast Community.
“Chuck was a mentor for me and one of the reasons I got into politics. I served with him on Council when he was vice mayor. As a strong advocate for the Southeast community, Chuck was instrumental in having Heritage High School built at its current location and bringing the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center to the Southeast Community.” said Mayor McKinley Price. He was critical to the development of the Framework for the Future, a citizen-based planning process that became a strategic part of the city planning process. Chuck provided a good balance for council.”
Allen was a man committed to improving the lives of others, making his city a better place to live and work, while promoting the arts and education. Newport News Television is airing a special tribute entitled “Remembering Charles Allen” on Cox Channel 48 and Verizon Channel 19 and on demand at NNTV
