Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Update

Posted on January 24, 2017 at 8:06 AM by Communications Department

It has been almost six months since the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $500,000 to the City of Newport News, the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Marshall-Ridley community to revitalize the community and CNIlogo_SCtransform the neighborhood. The grant, one of 10 awards totaling $8 million funded through HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI), was awarded to help craft a citizen-driven transformation plan to revitalize and transform this neighborhood.

Much has happened over the last few months to ensure that residents and business owners in the Choice Neighborhood are involved in the planning process. The City’s CNI Planning Team helped to establish task forces for improving housing, educational results and potential future success for youth. The task forces are working to create the conditions needed for public and private investment and to identify goals and strategies that will help improve the community and will be the foundation of the transformation plan.

In order to provide venues to keep residents and other stakeholders informed about the CNI planning process and various activities and events that are taking place in the community, the Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood website was established. The website includes information on our Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood, an event calendar, and information on how to get involved. In addition, Your Choice, a monthly newsletter, detailing progress and providing information about upcoming events was developed.

Community events engaged the youngest members of the Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood during the Community Fun Day held at Ridley Place. The event featured an afternoon of fun, food and entertainment for residents of all ages and the Holiday Celebration and Shop ‘Til You Drop, was held at the Lassiter Courts Boys and Girls Club. The Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority have hosted this event for more than a decade, bringing residents together to celebrate the holidays. Both events provided the opportunity for the Planning Team and residents to talk about assets and needs in the community and the CNI planning process. The events help to develop collaborative relationships that lead to a successful Choice Neighborhood planning process.
