Tamara Wellons and the Unifics
Throughout 2017, during the anniversary year of her 100th birthday, the city will honor the life and music of Newport News’ own, Ella Fitzgerald – “The First Lady of Song” during the Ella Fitzgerald Centennial Celebration.
On January 21, Tamara Wellons will perform Songs for Janie inspired by Zora Neale Hurston's literary novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Tamara's music serves as a 21st century epilogue to the 1937 story of womanhood, independence, and self-worth. An inspired evening celebrating Zora Neale Hurston’s 125th birthday, 80th year of her famed novel.
In the company of great musicians who have risen from the Hampton Roads area to international acclaim, on January 22, enjoy an evening with The Unifics. The Unifics remain a show-stopping soul group, whose legendary performances thrill crowds and leave following acts stunned with trepidation. Originally established at Howard University by musical aficionados, the late Al Johnson and Tom Fauntleroy, The Unifics continue to raise the bar with music and polished showmanship. With each show a lesson in musical history and professionalism, singers Charlie Lockhart and Garrett Hall round out the fine-tuned musical foursome.
