Citizen Fire Academy Applications are Available

Deadline to Apply is February 13th

The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) will be hosting its annual “Citizen Fire Academy”, which begins March 13th and runs through June 5th, 2017. citizen fire academy_SC The deadline to apply is February 13, 2017. The Citizen Fire Academy is a free, fourteen-week program. Participants will meet once a week on Monday evenings from 6 to 9 PM and one Saturday from 9:00 AM to noon.

This great program provides participants with an understanding of the work Fire Department does in the community. The goal of the Citizen Academy is not to train an individual to be a firefighter, but to provide the opportunity to become well informed citizens. Participants will receive an overview of the major divisions within the department, as well as fire and emergency medical services and learn valuable skills such as CPR, First Aid, fire extinguisher training, and emergency scene awareness.

Highlights will include overviews of Fire Department Operations, Specialty Teams, Fire Education and Prevention, the Emergency Operations Center, CERT Program, Logistics, Fire Training, and a tour of all the fire stations. Most of the classes will be held at the Newport News Fire Training Center, with some classes being held at Fire Station 3, 7, & 6. Graduation will be held at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.
