How Water Mains Break

Posted on January 6, 2017 at 8:20 AM by Communications Department

Water main breaks can occur for various reasons as a normal part of operating a water utility especially when a system has been in operation for over 100 years.
Pressure fluctuations, water temperature, ground movement, pipe material and the normal aging process of piping systems are some of the reasons, to name just a few. During the winter months, a higher volume of pipeline failures are experienced due to some of the reasons noted previously.

Additional personnel are on call 24/7 from December through March to respond to leaks that require immediate attention. Main breaks are unpredictable, but when they happen, restoring water service safely is the Newport News Waterworks’ Department’s priority.

If you see a water main that has broken, please call Waterworks Customer Service Call Center at 757-926-1000 or TTP 757-926-1100, Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM. or Nights - Holidays - Weekends - Emergencies Only Call: 757-234-4800 or TTP: 757-234-4933.
