Posted on January 6, 2017 at 8:21 AM by Communications Department

With potential winter weather approaching our area, now would be a great time to review what can be done to help keep you and your home safe and warm.
Newport News Waterworks has a FAQ sheet available that will help you to keep your pipes from freezing. The information includes what to do before freezing weather, during the freeze, and what do if the pipes do freeze.

According to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, for any weather-related emergency, make sure you have an updated emergency kit equipped with flashlights, a first aid kit, a 3-day supply of food and water, and more. Make a family plan that establishes meeting places, designates emergency contacts and records medical information to prepare for any emergency.

It is important that you stay informed. Listen to local media for weather-related information and instructions from emergency officials. You can also download the Ready Virginia app for your mobile device. The app is free for iPhone® and Android™ devices, and provides emergency planning and instant notification of weather hazards. More winter weather readiness information is available from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

The National Weather Service page can be customized for weather for your city and the Virginia Department of Transportation offers three ways to keep track of road conditions.
