Sheriff Gabe Morgan and his command staff marked accomplishments of sworn, civilian and contractor employees at the Newport news Sheriff Office’s 11th annual Promotion and Awards Ceremony in mid-December at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.

Delegate Mike Mullin, who won the 93rd District seat in the November election served as guest speaker. Thirteen deputies were promoted during 2016 with a new captain, lieutenant and four sergeants pinned by family members while a new corporal and five master deputies were also recognized for their successes.
Other awards given out included Purple Hearts to two deputies injured in service to the sheriff’s office, life-saving medals, meritorious service medals, a citizen service medal, a group awards and retirement plaques in recognition of employees’ years of service.
Sheriff Morgan recognized the collaborative efforts his staff inside and other city departments that were instrumental in completing the new booking area.
Sheriff Morgan also thanked the Deputy of the Year - Deputy Robbin Beale – and the sworn and civilian employees of the quarter who are selected by their peers for those honors.
The evening ended with Sheriff Morgan and sworn staff reaffirming their oath to support the Constitution of the United States and of Virginia and to “faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all duties incumbent upon” a Deputy Sheriff for the City of Newport News.
