On Saturday, December 17th, from 12 to 4:00 PM, the Newsome House is pleased to present Standing on Our Principles, an event that celebrates th

e history of Kwanzaa through storytelling, music and art. Located at 2803 Oak Avenue in Newport News, the event is designed for all ages and is free and open to the public.
Members of the community will share stories, songs, music and poetry highlighting the principles of Kwanzaa which was formed to bring awareness to African-American history and culture. The stories told will be a mix of African and African-American experiences. A special African art exhibit will be included in the event. Art will be sold and a portion of the proceeds will go to The Newsome House Fundraising Campaign.
The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about African-American history and to bring the community together.
The Newsome House honors the legacy of Joseph Thomas Newsome by engaging the public in an ongoing study and remembrance of African American history and culture.
