Downtown Newport News could have a dynamic

change in appearance and vitality according to a new urban design vision unveiled at the State of the City and recently presented in greater detail to City Council. This redevelopment vision depicts the nature and character that downtown could experience.
The future for downtown Newport News most likely does not include high rise office buildings or large scale retail development. However, it can be a vibrant urban mixed-use community of housing, businesses and entertainment, appealing to young professionals and entrepreneurs while embracing the downtown manufacturing heritage.
The Plan includes a re-imagined district:
• Connecting downtown to the neighborhoods to the east and to Norfolk & Portsmouth by a reimagined 28th Street Garden Bridge and a new Public Pier.
• Influencing transit planning that will include a Bus Rapid Transit stop, and a design for all transit systems to cross the 28th Street Garden Bridge.
• Reusing historic buildings as art spaces and interesting places to live and work.
• Reimagining the intersection of Washington Avenue & 28th Street as the main cross roads in downtown Newport News.
• Enhancing the waterfront as a multi-use destination with a new public pier and other public amenities.
