Now through the end of the year, Newport News library patrons can erase fines for overdue materials by donating non-perishable, unexpired food items or personal care items. All items collected will be donated to the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. Through the
Can Your Fines program each item brought in to any of the branch libraries will take the place of one overdue fine. This does not apply to fees for damaged or lost library materials.
The
Can Your Fines program at the Newport News Public Library System has been a holiday tradition for nearly three decades. Last year, library patrons brought in almost 1,000 food items, covering over $1,400 in fines, and returning 66 overdue items.
