This Saturday, November 26, the City of Newport News is encouraging the community to support local businesses in recognition of Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest shopping times of the year.
The day was first created in 2010 by American Express to help encourage consumers to shop at small, locally owned establishments. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses have generated 64 percent of new jobs which employ 50 percent of all private sector workers and make up more than 99% of the nation’s businesses.
The City of Newport News appreciates the important contributions our local small businesses give our city. Newport News has an array of locally owned retail shops and restaurants. While Small Business Saturday is highlighted as a special day, we encourage support for them year round. From local shops to some of your favorite eateries, be sure to show your support and celebrate small businesses and all they do for our communities.
