Over the summer, the City of Newport News Engineering Department met with residents of Nicewood Drive to discuss traffic calming measures. During the meeting, the Engineering staff and residents discussed alternative options along with the advantages and disadvantages of various traffic calming measures and received citizen input to help develop a Master Traffic Calming Plan. The plan, endorsed by the residents along Nicewood Drive via petition, includes three speed humps with the appropriate signage and pavement markings. Speed humps are 6 inches tall and about 24 feet long overall, with a gradual slope that allows travel at posted speeds. They include advance signs and pavement arrow markings.
The Department of Engineering plans to proceed with a trial period of the traffic cal
ming plan, which includes the placement of “Notification Signage” showing the locations of the speed humps. The 30 day trial period will run from November 30 to December 29. During the trial phase, the Engineering Department will receive comments on the proposed plan through the City’s 311 Contact Center at 933-2311 or firstname.lastname@example.org
. After the comments have been reviewed and considered by Engineering and other departments, a recommendation on installing the proposed plan improvements will be made.
