Newport News Police Foundation Receives Funding For Youth Leadership Camp From Millers Foundation

Posted on November 17, 2016 at 8:13 AM by Communications Department

Youth will be able to enjoy another great summer at the Newport News Police Foundation’s Youth Leadership Camp thanks to a $4,500 grant from the Millers Foundation. Established in 2007, the Youth Leadership Camp is a partnership between the YouthLeaders_SCNewport News Police Foundation, Newport News Police Department, the United States Coast Guard, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula. This summer camp experience provides leadership skills, promotes physical fitness, and is aimed at increasing positive interactions between youth and police officers. To date, the summer camp has helped more than 500 teens.

The summer program is open to boys and girls ages 13 to 17 and held each summer at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown. Officers engage teens by discussing youth-related topics and demonstrating real-time policing tactics, hands-on training and activities, which teach the importance of leadership, character and life skills.

This year the Millers Foundation awarded a total of nine grants to community organizations around Hampton Roads. Millers Foundation is the nonprofit founded in 2004 by Miller Oil Company. Serving Hampton Roads since 1977, Miller Oil Company is a provider of heating oil, HVAC, commercial fuels and convenience stores. The Millers Foundation is committed to developing relationships and programs that support the local community and works to identify and support organizations that make a difference in the community.
