The Newport News Planning Commission at their semi-monthly meeting on Wednesday, voted to recommend that the City Council approve an amendment to the

2030 Framework for the Future Comprehensive Plan that would support a rezoning of the property for a commercial development. The Peninsula Airport Commission on behalf of the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is asking for a change to the comprehensive plan land use map in order to support a shopping center near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Brick Kiln Boulevard.
The Planning Commission also recommended that City Council approve a change of zoning for approximately 33 acres of Peninsula Airport Commission (Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport) property from Light Industrial to Retail Commercial so the property can be used for commercial development. The potential developer is seeking to anchor the development with a major grocery store. The land use change and rezoning will now go to the City Council for action.
