Citizen-driven change for Southeast Community neighborhood

The City of Newport News and the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority were awarded a Choice Neighborhood Initiative Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant encourages citizen driven change so that neighborhoods can transform from areas of concentrated poverty into neighborhoods of opportunity with access to a range of jobs, amenities, and supportive services.

Three task force kick-off meetings based on the core goals will be held next week. The meetings are open to the public but only the residents, business owners, and other stakeholders who live in the Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood (bounded by 39th Street, Marshall Avenue, Hampton Roads Harbor, and I-664) can join and participate on the task forces.

The HOUSING TASK FORCE MEETING will be held Tuesday, November 15 from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at the Family Investment Center, 600 Ridley Circle in Newport News. This Task Force will work to replace distressed public and assisted housing with high-quality mixed-income housing that is well-managed and meets the needs of the surrounding neighborhood.

The NEIGHBORHOOD TASK FORCE MEETING will be held Tuesday, November 15 from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at Jim's Local Market, 3101 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. This Task Force will work to create the conditions needed for public and private investment in distressed neighborhoods to offer the services and amenities available and important to families like good schools, local businesses and transportation.

The PEOPLE TASK FORCE MEETING will be held Wednesday, November 16 from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at the Family Investment Center, 600 Ridley Circle in Newport News. This Task Force will work to improve educational results and potential future success for youth by providing services and support systems right to youth and their families.

In addition, a CITIZEN’S PLANNING WORKSHOP will be held on Saturday, November 19th from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM at Marshall Early Learning Center, 743 24th Street in Newport News. The purpose of this interactive workshop is to provide residents and other community members with basic information on the community planning process and how they can get involved. It will include information about how a plan is created, how it is put into action, who is involved with the planning process, and how residents can help shape the future of their neighborhood. Childcare will be available. Please RSVP to at gmorgan@nnva.gov or 757-926-3834.
