Volunteers plant seedlings and attend the raised beds
The City of Newport News recently joined several other local organizations to expand an existing garden located at the Marshall Early Learning Center. The first stage of planting occurred Saturday, March 26th, with further planting days scheduled later in the month.

In addition to fresh produce, the garden will provide Marshall’s pre-K students and this summer’s SPARK program participants’ valuable hands-on experience and learning opportunities. Having begun with several small raised beds last year, the garden is being expanded this season to include 36 raised beds, a pumpkin patch and even a corn maze.
The garden is a collaborative effort, but it would not be possible without the dedicated faculty, staff, parents and students at Marshall School. In addition to the school and the City, the other participating organizations include The Newport News Master Gardeners, Ferguson Cares, The Newport News Green Foundation, Southeast CARE Coalition and Moody Street in Barnesville.
