November 8 is finally on the horizon, and here’s what you need to know to make Election Day go smoothly.

Polling places are open from 6:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Election Day. Anyone in line at 7:00 P.M. will be allowed to vote. When you arrive, you will be required to show a photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport, or a Virginia Voter Photo ID Card. You may visit the
Virginia Department of Elections website for details of
acceptable forms of identification.
Voters who arrive without proper identification will be able to vote using a provisional ballot. A provisional ballot will require the voter to submit a copy of a valid photo ID to the electoral board by noon the following Monday. Ballots cast by voters who fail to submit the required identification before the deadline will not be counted.
You must vote at the polling place designated to your neighborhood. The Virginia Department of Elections has made it easy to
find your polling location by visiting their website and typing in your home address. As a reminder, the Jefferson Precinct in Newport News has been temporarily relocated to Huntington Middle School gymnasium located at 3401 Orcutt Avenue.
And it’s not too late to vote absentee in-person. In-person absentee voting must be done by 5 PM Saturday, November 5th. You can
apply online to vote absentee using the Virginia Department of Elections website. Registered voters who vote absentee in person are subject to the same rules that apply to voting at the polls. Newport News voters can vote absentee in-person at either of the following locations:
• City Hall, 2400 Washington Avenue, 6th Floor, Mon – Fri 9 AM – 5 PM, Sat Nov 5th 9 AM – 5 PM
• City Center, Fountain Plaza II, 700 Town Center Drive, 2nd floor, Tues & Thurs 8 AM – 5 PM, Sat Nov 5th 9 AM – 5 PM
